Indians host Warriors in final home stand
SPIRIT LAKE – The Spirit Lake football team completes its home football schedule against Sioux Center tonight.
The visiting Warriors are coming off a big 10-7 win over Sibley-Ocheyedan, their first district victory.
Spirit Lake coach Josh Bolluyt said Sioux Center features a blitzing defense that’s played well all year.
“They also moved the ball fairly well against Sibley-Ocheyedan,” he said. “They’re a team that’s getting better every week.”
The Warriors are like most teams in Northwest Iowa in that they prefer to run the ball.
“They have a good tailback and even though they run out of a double wing, he gets the ball a lot,” said Bolluyt. “They don’t do a lot of passing, but they get decent yards throwing the ball. They probably run about 70 percent of the time.”
Meanwhile, the Indians will look to clean up some miscues after last week’s homecoming loss to Sheldon.
Spirit Lake had early opportunities as the Orabs turned the ball over on its first two possession.
Sheldon’s defense held though and the Orabs then scored on a screen pass.
“That was missed execution rather than missed tackles,” said Bolluyt.
Keys for the Indians this week are to stay away from the turnovers and penalties.
“When we don’t do those things, those are the game where we have success,” he said.
