Playing for a playoff spot
GRAETTINGER – With just three weeks remaining in the season, tonight’s game between Graettinger/Terril and West Bend-Mallard likely will determine which team will make the playoffs.
While the Knights are 2-2 in district play, they still have one of the district’s top teams to take on in Armstrong-Ringsted.
West Bend-Mallard has played the district’s top three teams-North Sentral Kossuth, Laurens-Marathon and Armstrong-Ringsted-and lost each of those games, but still have a chance at the playoffs by winning its final three games.
Comparing scores, the Wolverines lost 49-6 to North Sentral Kossuth last week, while the Knights were able to play with the Eagles.
Conversely, West Bend-Mallard scored 40 points in a 52-40 loss to Laurens-Marathon, while Graettinger/Terril scored just 15 points in last week’s 43-15 loss.
Graettinger/Terril coach Karlton Hector said he knew his team needed its best game against Laurens-Marathon and the Knights didn’t have it. He’d like to see that change this week.
“We want to just come out and play well and not worry about the turnovers and penalties,” Hector said. “We want to play well in every aspect of the game-physically and mentally-and not hurt ourselves.”
Offensively, Hector said his team needs to sustain blocks better and play until the whistle blows.
“Defensively, the guys will just have to do their own job. That’s how we’ve had success this year,” he said.
