HULL – After winning its first-ever Lakes Conference title in 2007, the Spirit Lake Park girls cross country team managed another phenomenal feat in earning their second straight crown-seven all-conference performers.
Considering that only five runners count toward the team score, the Class 2A No. 2 Indians showed how deep they are with talent with their win on Monday.
“In my 16 years of coaching, I’ve never seen all seven girls make all-conference,” said SLP coach Tim Heinitz. “This was our best race as a team.-from our first runner to our seventh runner, there was only 37 seconds difference.”
Spirit Lake Park won easily with 32 points with Estherville Lincoln Central/Armstrong-Ringsted second with 75 points. LeMars was third with 98.
The tight pack began with senior Carrie Emgarten, who placed third in 16 minutes, 5 seconds followed by a 5-7 finish with Abby Gustafson in 16:10, Megan Skalbeck in 16:13 and Mary Brown in 16:18.
Completing the team scoring was Erin Webb in 11th in 16:34.
Non-counting scores, but still earning all-conference were Briana Brunsvold who placed 14th in 16:41 and Chelsea Parks, who placed 15th in 16:42.
The top 15 runners earn all-conference honors.
“Up and down the lineup, the girls pick each other up and give each other strength,” said Heinitz. “We saw it all come together tonight.”
The Indians end the regular season at Spencer on Thursday before hosting the district meet next Thursday.
