SLP boys place six on all-conference list

HULL – With the quality of runners in the Lakes Conference the past few years, the Class 2A No. 1 Spirit Lake Park boys team put on a show at Monday’s conference meet.

While the SLP girls team placed seven girls on the all-conference list, the boys squad’s performance was just as impressive with six runners earning all-conference by placing in the top 15.

The Indians had 51 points with Western Christian second with 73.

Alec Baldwin led the way with a fifth place finish in 16 minutes, 50 seconds.

“Alec felt like he didn’t have a great race, but I say any time you’re running under 17 (minutes), you’re doing okay,” said SLP coach Tim Heinitz.

Teammate Mitch O’Neill was the surprise of the night as he finished ninth in 17:25.

“Mitch hasn’t been our second runner all year and he ran JV last year,” said Heinitz. “The difference is night and day with this kid. He’s really blossomed.”

Jesse Baldwin, who just missed all-conference honors a year ago, finished 11th in 17:30 with teammate Tyler Gustafson right behind in 12th in 17:31. Keith Byers completed the scoring with a 14th place finish in 17:39.

Senior Jon Messer also made all-conference with his 15th place in 17:40.

“Jon worked his tail off to go from 28th to 15th and make all-conference,” said Heinitz.

Also running for the Indians, Jordan Knox finished 25th in 18:30.

The Indians end the regular season at Spencer on Thursday before hosting the district meet next Thursday.
