Lakers enjoy final home match
Although the Iowa Lakes volleyball team gave its fans an extra game to watch, the Lakers still came up with a solid 3-1 win over Iowa Central on “Pack the Gym” night Wednesday.
Although the starting a little slow in the final game of the season, the Lakers had an eight-point swing in the first game to win it 25-18. The visiting Tritons stayed close in game two, but the Lakers prevailed for a 25-22 victory.
Errors by Iowa Lakes in game three helped Iowa Central win 25-17.
“We missed our first three serves and four more later on. We also had seven hitting errors, so we gave them 14 points,” said Iowa Lakes coach Scott Tschetter.
The coach said the team has struggled with game threes recently, but he hopes to figure it out by tournament time.
The Lakers came back in game four with 12 kills in a 25-15 win.
Yawen Xiao led the Laker attack with 18 kills while Teegan Hunziker and Caitlyn Moore each had 10.
“Yawen just kind of took over that last game,” said Tschetter.
He added that Xiao and Hunziker seem to switch roles from match to match. When one of them leads the team in kills, the other has a solid defensive night in the back row.
That was the case Wednesday also as Hunziker had a team-high 28 digs.
Alison Albers remained consistent in both setting and blocking with 37 assists and five blocks.
Xiao led the serving with three aces.
The victory gives the Lakers a 7-0 record in region play and secures the No. 1 seed for the Lakers in the Region Tournament.
Iowa Lakes (21-18) travels to the Iowa Central Tournament this Friday and Saturday.
