A-R holds off Chargers’ charge
ARMSTRONG – Ahead 49-12 at halftime, No. 8 Armstrong-Ringsted appeared to have the game well in control against No. 5 Laurens-Marathon.
But the Chargers nearly came all the way back with some late scores with the Mustangs finally hanging on for a 55-52 victory.
The Mustangs were even ahead 55-18 in the third quarter when the Chargers began their charge back scoring five unanswered scores.
After cutting the lead to 55-44, Laurens-Marathon successfully executed an onside kick, drove down and scored and added the two-point conversion.
With under a minute remaining in the game though, the Chargers couldn’t repeat the feat and A-R fell on the ball and then ran out the clock.
A-R quarter Ridge Christiansen rushed for three touchdowns on runs of 2, 72 and 2 and also threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Craig Tigges.
Tonderum rushed for 252 yards including touchdown runs of 72, 41 and 49 yards.
Tanner LaBore also had a 39-yard touchdown run.
The Mustangs had 495 yards on the ground while Laurens-Marathon was 25-42 passing for 404 yards and one interception.
A-R held the visitors to just 75 yards on the ground.
christiansen ended the night with 218 yards rushing and 20 yards passing.
Tigges caught one pass for 9 yards and Cody Hantelman had a catch for 11 yards.
LaBore had seen tackles while Tonderum and Hantelman each had six. LaBore also snagged the interception.
A-R improves to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in district play. The Mustangs end the season at home against Graettinger/Terril next Friday.
