Lakers pull away from Alumni

By Staff | Oct 28, 2008

Although the lineup for the Iowa Lakes men’s basketball team received nearly a complete overhaul from a year ago, the result of Saturday’s Lakers vs. Alumni & Friends was nearly identical to the 2007 exhibition matchup.

A year ago, the Alumni jumped out to an early lead only to watch the Lakers put together a run and onto a 105-76 victory.

On Saturday, the Lakers never trailed as they started with two 3-pointers by Josh Riser and Darryl Davis.

However, the 2008-09 squad never led by more than nine in the first half as they Alumni made key shots to keep it close.

The Alumni also took advantage of trips to the free throw line as eight of their first 10 points came from the charity stripe.

The Alumni cut the deficit to three points at the 14:20 mark when Lucas Hough, a former Graettinger High School standout, knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 16-13.

At the 11-minute mark, the Alumni trailed by just two, 23-21, after Bill Fallon hit his own basket of the game.

The Lakers then went on a 9-2 run with a three-point play by Riser, a basket by Robert Burns, another by Dalston Jones and a three-point play by Sam Adams.

The Alumni responded with the next eight points with three points from Mike Smith, a layup by Todd Hough and Lucas Hough’s second 3-pointer.

Late in the half, Iowa Lakes again pulled away to a nine-point lead, with a late 3-pointer by the Alumni making a six-point game at the break, 48-42.

Led by Davis, the Lakers all but put the game away with a 14-0 run to start the second half. Davis scored 10 points in the run with Burns and Riser both adding a basket each.

Iowa Lakes led by 20 or more the rest of the way.

Four Lakers reached double digits led by Davis with 20 while Burns had 17, Riser 16 and 12 by Armon Boston.

Nick Joyce led the Alumni with 17 points while Mike Smith had 15 and Patrick Riley had 10.
