Newcomers should give big boost to returning sophomores

The Iowa Lakes women’s basketball team has plenty of familiar faces as the 2008-09 season approaches.

All five freshmen from last year’s squad return for their sophomore season- Ricca Soper, Samantha Boje, Hannah Downing, Jazzmine Hall and Jynna Coyle.

The squad will look to improve on a 19-11 overall record and 10-8 in Region XI.

The Laker women begin their season today against Cloud County College at Council Bluffs. The Estherville-based team stays overnight in Council Bluffs and plays Iowa Western Sunday.

Iowa Lakes coach Brian Radtke said all have shown improvement in their transition from freshmen to sophomores.

“Jazzmine has take some big steps,” he said. “Jynna and Hanna are more confident and Ricca and Sam are steady and doing what they were doing toward the end of last year.”

Of those returning, Boje was the only player to average double digits as she scored 11 points per game.

“She’s been shooting well, so hopefully we can use her on the wing instead of bringing the ball up the floor all the time,” said Radtke.

Although Radtke had a few more recruits lined up, only three newcomers are on the roster-Shanette Stokes, Danitra Lewis and Jade Hatchett.

But they’re good ones.

Two have a little Division I experience-Danitra Lewis and Jade Hatchett.

At 6-2, Lewis is a low-post threat.

“She can play with the guys,” Radtke said.

Hatchett is a point guard and the coach said she “makes smart decisions on the floor.”

The third newcomer is Shanette Stokes.

“She’s smooth,” Radtke said succintly.

Stokes is a sophomore who played a year with Illinois Central in Peoria.
