D1 schools too tough for Iowa Lakes

By Staff | Nov 4, 2008

COUNCIL BLUFFS – The Iowa Lakes women’s basketball team didn’t start the season with any easy games in its first weekend of play.

The Lakers took on a pair of Division I colleges and ended with a pair of losses.

On Saturday, Iowa Lakes lost 90-39 to Cloud County and then lost 66-55 to Iowa Western on Sunday.

Iowa Lakes coach Brian Radtke said Cloud County was just that good.

“They were very quick and had good outside shooters,” he said.

The Lakers also had 31 turnovers.

“I bet at least 30 of their points were layups,” Radtke said.

The Lakers, who only have eight players on their team, also were hindered by their lack of numbers with post player Danitra Lewis in foul trouble.

“We didn’t have anybody else who could challenge down low,” said Radtke.

Shanette Stokes led the Lakers with nine points while Jynna Coyle had a team-high seven rebounds.

Radtke said his team played much better on Sunday against Iowa Western

Trailing 35-23 at halftime, the Lakers cut the deficit to two points with around 5 minutes remaining.

“Then we made some mistakes and fouls and they got the lead back up to seven or eight,” Radtke said.

With only eight players, Radtke said his team also might have been a little tired playing back-to-back games.

“We did shoot the ball much better, making nine 3-pointers,” Radtke said.

Samantha Boje hit four 3-pointers and led the Lakers with 14 points. Jade Hatchett contributed 13 points along with a team-high seven assists.

Lewis had a team-high 10 rebounds while Ricca Soper had three steals and two blocked shots. Coyle also had three steals.

Iowa Lakes (0-2) travels to Norfolk, Neb. this Friday and Saturday for the NECC Classic.
