NORFOLK, Neb. – The Iowa Lakes women’s basketball team lost its second straight game to start the season with a 70-65 loss to MidPlains on Saturday at the Northeast Community College Classic.

The Lakers, who lost by the same score to host NECC on Friday, followed a similar pattern in its second game.

“We dug ourselves a hole in the first half,” said Iowa Lakes coach Brian Radtke. “We didn’t play with a lot of intensity. We could’ve won both games this weekend if we hadn’t dug a hole in the first half.”

After falling behind 26-12 to Mid Plains, the Lakers rallied to cut the deficit to three by halftime, 35-32.

However MidPlains kept the lead in the second half.

“We just didn’t do enough of the right things,” said Radtke. “We’d make a little run and then we’d foul or miss a free throw. It was a combination of four or five things.”

The Lakers were led by Samantha Boje with 16 points while Danitra Lewis contributed a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds. Jade Hatchett also had 13 points along with five assists.

Radtke said his team has the pieces for a successful season.

“We’re getting valuable minutes off the bench, but we’re also fighting little injuries that keep of couple of or players from playing their best,” he said.

Iowa Lakes (0-2) hosts Minnesota West in the Lakers’ home opener at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
