MARSHALLTOWN – The Iowa Lakes volleyball team won its second straight Region XI (a) Championship by sweeping both its opponents in the regional tournament this weekend.

On Friday, the Lakers defeated North Iowa Area Community College 3-0 by scores of 25-22, 25-17, 25-21.

On Saturday, Iowa Lakes beat Marshalltown 25-21, 25-16, 25-19.

The two wins return the Lakers (34-22) to the National Tournament which is at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. on Nov. 20.

Against NIACC, Alison Albers had 32 set assists and six blocks while Yawen Xiao had 20 kills and two ace serves.

Teegan Hunziker had 22 digs and Erin Jacobsen had six blocks.

“On Friday we didn’t play very well,” said Iowa Lakes coach Scott Tschetter. “We made a lot of mental mistakes and missed 14 or 15 serves so we were giving up four to five points per game.”

Tschetter said he was concerned about his team heading into the championship game.

“It bothered me going into Saturday, but we played very well and our energy level was good,” he said. “I think that was partly due to the girls having been there before. They knew what it took to be competitive.”

Albers had 33 set assists while Xiao had 18 kills.

Defensively, Albers, Jacobsen, Xiao and Rachael Nelsen each had four blocks.

Hunziker and Mindy Meyer had 18 digs apiece.
