Estherville Lincoln Central’s Joel Kazmerzak and the Midgets defense kept Sheldon off the base paths for most of the night in a 7-2 victory over the Orabs on Friday.

The loss was the first for the Orabs this season as they fall to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the Lakes Conference.

Kazmerzak struck out six and walked two batters while giving up just three hits in earning the win.

ELC’s defense did have four errors, three of which led to Sheldon’s two runs, but was otherwise solid.

Unlike Wednesday, when ELC left nine baserunners stranded, the Midgets came up with the key hits including a solo home run by Kazmerzak and a two-run shot by Jeremy Hunt-both over the left-centerfield fence.

ELC had an auspicious start when the leadoff batter Adam Nellis singled and then Danny Ridenour hit a ball to third base. ELC had two errors on the play as one run scored.

Kazmerzak helped out the team with a strikeout, a groundout to third baseman Cody Prather and another strikeout to limit the damage to one run.

ELC loaded the bases in the second inning and came away empty-handed, but the Midget had success in the third.

Marcus Christensen reached base when the center fielder dropped a long fly ball. Keith Fandel followed with an RBI double with Alex Arends then hitting an RBI single as ELC led 2-1.

The play that showed the ball bounced the Midgets’ way on this night is when Taylor Zeutonhorst in a grounder off Kazmerzak’s leg. The ball bounced toward first baseman Jeremy Hunt, who tagged the runner for the first out of the inning

The play didn’t affect Kazmerzak’s bat as he hit his home run with one out in the bottom of the inning.

Also in the fourth, Christensen drew a two-out walk, stole second base and scored on a single by Fandel.

In the fifth inning, Scott Schmidt drew leadoff walk and two runs scored when Hunt hit his home run with one out.

Sheldon added one run in the sixth inning helped by an ELC error followed by a double. ELC added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning as Arends reached base and scored when Cody Prather singled followed by an Orab error in left field.

At the plate, Fandel was 3-4 with two RBI. Prather was 2-4 with a double. Hun was 1-3 with two RBI.
