ELC finishes third at Carroll

CARROLL – The Estherville Lincoln Central baseball team went 2-1 to place third at the Carroll Tournament this weekend.

On Saturday, ELC beat Kuemper 6-5. On Sunday, the Midgets lost to Denison-Schleswig 8-6 and came back with an 8-2 win over Algona in the third-place game.

Against Kuemper, ELC broke a 5-5 tie with Justin Doyle driving in the game-winning run.

Scott Schmidt led off the single with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cody Prather and to third on a single by Jeremy Hunt before scoring on Prather’s single.

Keith Fandel went seven innings, giving up five runs on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Only one run was earned as ELC had five errors in the game.

ELC pounded out 12 hits with Schmidt going 3-4 with two RBI, Fandel was 2-3 with three RBI and jeremy Hunt was 3-4.

Against Denison-Schleswg, ELC again struggled with errors and the Monarchs had 10 hits.

Cody Prather took the loss. He pitched 3 2/3 innings, giving up 10 runs, seven earned, on 10 hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

At the plate, Fandel was 2-3 with an rBI, Marcus Christensen was 2-4 with an RBI. Hunt was 1-3 with a double and two RBI and Prather was 1-3.

Against Algona, ELC jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Algona scored its two in the top of the second.

Joel Kazmerzak went seven innings, giving up two runs on eight hits with seen strikeouts and two walks.

At the plate, Marcus Christensen had two doubles and an RBI. Chance Moore was 2-4 with an RBI. Alex Arends was 2-4 with a double and an RBI, Schmidt was 2-4, Fandel was 1-4 with a double and an RBI and Doyle was 1-4.

ELC (10-4) is at Armstrong today.
