ELC’s slide in Lakes continues
After a strong start, the Estherville Lincoln Central baseball team is struggling in Lakes Conference play after a solid start.
The Midgets have lost five of the last six in league play with a 4-3 loss to Emmetsburg on Monday the last of them.
ELC can point to its defense with two unearned runs to start the game in the first inning.
Joel Kazmerzak pitched a solid game giving up four hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.
ELC’s bats had eight hits, but the Midgets also struck out 16 times to Taylor Morris and left nine baserunners stranded-five in the last two innings.
ELC trailed 4-0 before Chance Moore scored on an Emmetsburg error in the bottom of the third.
In the fifth inning, Moore hit a triple and Keith Fandel hit a two-run home run over the left-center field fence to cut the deficit to 4-3.
In the sixth, ELC had the bases loaded with two outs after a single by Scott Schmid and walks to Jeremy Hunt and Kazmerzak, but the E’Hawks’ Morris came up with strikeout No. 14.
In the seventh inning, Fandel and Alex Arends had a pair of one-out singles, but Morris shut the door with two strikeouts.
ELC (13-11, 6-7) is home against Class 2A No. 3 Cherokee on Wednesday.
