Seventh-inning rally not enough

By Staff | Jul 2, 2009

ELC shortstop Alex Arends puts a little extra into a routine throw to first for an out against Cherokee.

Estherville Lincoln Central attempted to rally against Class 2A No. 3 Cherokee, but the 8-1 deficit to start the inning was too much to overcome as the Midgets lost 8-4.

“It was good to see the kids battle back and get the bats going,” said ELC coach Chuck Fandel. “But the errors and too many walks put Cherokee up early. We need to shore up those areas.”

The Braves took a advantage of a couple ELC errors to score a run in the first inning and another error in the second led to two more runs.

Cherokee led 5-0 before ELC got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Scott Schmidt drew a leadoff walk followed by a single from Cody Prather. Joel Kazmerzak drew a two-out walk to load the bases and Marcus Christensen hit an RBI single to left field.

Prather also tried to score on the play, but was thrown out at the plate.

After giving up three runs in the top of the seventh inning, Alex Arends came up with a two-RBI single and Cody Prather had an RBI double before Cherokee finally retired the side.

Keith Fandel pitched six innings, giving up four hits with five strikeouts and five walks in the loss.

Prather pitched one inning giving up three runs on two hits with one strikeout and one walk.

At the plate, Fandel was 2-3 with a double, Prather was 2-4 with an RBI, Arends was 1-4 with two RBI, Schmidt was 1-3 and Marcus Christensen was 1-4.

ELC travels to Spirit Lake on Friday.
