Indians take one from ELC Midgets
SPIRIT LAKE – At times this season, Estherville Lincoln Central’s tendency has been to out-hit opponents, but still come up short of a victory.
That was the case Friday against rival Spirit Lake as the Indians had six hits to ELC’s eight, but won 5-1.
“Give Spirit Lake credit-they got the hits with runners on second and third and we didn’t,” said ELC coach Chuck Fandel.
The Midgets had runners at second and third in the first inning with one out and came away empty-handed. ELC also had runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings.
ELC scored its one run in the second inning when Cody Prather led off with a single. He was forced out when Jeremy Hunt reached on a fielder’s choice. Hunt stole second and scored on an RBI single by Joel Kazmerzak.
Spirit Lake came up with three runs in the third while holding the Midget scoreless the rest of the way.
Kazmerzak took the loss on the mound. He pitched six innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits with one strikeout, four walks and one hit batter.
Spirit Lake’s Mitch Peschon earned the win, giving up eights hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
For ELC, Chance Moore was 3-4. Marcus Christensen and Keith Fandel each went 1-4 with a double. Scott Schmidt, Prather and Kazmerzak all were 1-3.
For Spirit Lake, Derek Miner was 3-4 with an RBI, Levi Davis was 2-3 with two RBI and TJ Johnson was 2-3 with a solo home run.
Tyler Lutz threw a no-hitter to help the Estherville Lincoln Central junior varsity defeat Spirit Lake 4-0 on Friday.
Lutz struck out 10 batters and walked one.
Lutz, Joe Clayton and Gable Bonner each went 1-3 at the plate. Clayton had two RBI and Bonner had a double. Adam McCarthy was 1-2 with an RBI.
