Knights end season on winning note

TERRIL – Graettinger/Terril ended its season on a winning note with an 11-2 win over Corwith-Wesley-Luverne on Friday.

The Knights jumped out to an early lead and played solid defense behind pitcher Malorie Girres.

“The girls played good defense,” said G/T coach Stephanie Hanson. “I also thought we hit the ball hard and showed good discipline at the plate.”

G/T scored in the first inning when Dakota Hovinga was hit by a pitch. She stole second and third bases and scored when Amanda Oleson grounded out to the pitcher.

In the second inning, Girres and Morgan Matthews both singled to lead off the inning. Hailley Nelson, courtesy running for Girres scored when Flaharty reached on a fielder’s choice.

Matthews scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Hovinga and Flaharty scored when Oleson grounded out to the shortstop.

With two outs, Theresa Petersen singled, stole second base and scored on a single by Tasha Neilson as the Knights led 5-0.

The Panthers got two runs back in the top of the fourth with three hits in the inning.

G/T added a run in the fifth with consecutive singles by Maddy Schany and Nikki Brown with Schany scoring when Girres reached on a fielder’s choice.

The Knights tried to close out the game in the sixth, but came up short, only scoring five runs.

At the plate, Girres was 3-4 with a double and two RBI, Neilson was 2-3 with an RBI, Flaharty was 2-4 with an RBI, Brown was 1-4 with two RBI, Schany was 1-2 with an RBI, Hovinga was 1-3 with an RBI, Petersen and Matthews each were 1-4 and Oleson had two RBI.

Malorie Girres earned the win. She struck out four batters while giving up eight hits and one walk.

G/T starts Class 1A postseason play Wednesday in a 6 p.m. against Ruthven-Ayrshire at Armstrong.
