Class 1A Regional Softball: Knights come up big in eighth
SPENCER – Graettinger/Terril coach Stephanie Hanson often said in through the 2009 season, “There always seems to be that one inning.”
What she means is the Knights often had one inning where the opposing teams scores a bunch runs.
Friday, in the second-round Class 1A game, Harris-Lake Park had its inning in the top of the seventh, tying the game at 3-3 with two runs.
Fortunately for Graettinger/Terril, the Knights came up with the key run in the eighth as Lindsay Flaharty scored the game-winning run on a a double to left-center field by Dakota Hovinga.
Next up for the Knights is North Sentral Kossuth, a 3-2 victor over Armstrong-Ringsted on Friday.
“If we play with confidence like we did tonight, we should be able to play with them,” said Hanson.
NSK won the teams’ only meeting 13-1 this season.
“We just couldn’t hit that night,” Hanson said.
Against H-LP, Graettinger/Terril jumped out to the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning.
Amanda Oleson reached on a walk, went to second when Theresa Petersen grounded out and to third when Tasha Neilson reached on an error. Maddy Schany, who was 4-4 on the night, singled up the middle to score the run.
H-LP tied the game up in the third inning, but the Knights plated two more in the fifth.
Oleson reached on an error followed by three straight singles from Petersen, Neilson and Schany. Oleson scored on Schany’s hit. A one-out sacrifice fly to center field by Malorie Girres scored the second run.
H-LP rallied in the seventh by hitting the ball hard, according to Hanson.
Girres earned the win on the mound. She gave up seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
At the plate, Neilson was 2-4 while Petersen and Girres each went 1-4 and Hovinga was 1-5.
Graettinger/Terril and North Sentral Kossuth play at 7 p.m. on Monday.
