Class 3A Regional Softball: Crusaders survive ELC again

By Staff | Jul 14, 2009

ORANGE CITY – Class 3A No. 2 Bishop Heelan again came up with the key play at the right time to defeat Estherville Lincoln Central 1-0 for the second time this season.

The Crusaders defeated ELC 1-0 in the Spirit Lake Tournament in June.

On Monday, both teams had few chances to score.

The Crusaders got their leadoff runner to third base in the first inning.

However shortstop Emily Kirchner snagged a line drive and doubled up the runner at third base.

ELC’s best chance to score came in the fourth inning when Emily Kirchner singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a passed ball.

That was the only chance.

Meanwhile, the Crusaders came up with a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth inning. The runner stole second and a sacrifice bunt moved the game-winning runner to third.

A double scored the run.

ELC had only two hits-one each from Kirchner and Kendall Bosch.

Bosch took the loss on the mound. She gave up three hits and had six strikeouts.

Seniors Maggie Asman, Taylar Jacobson, Kelsey Shatto and Caitlyn Swisher end their high school careers with the loss.

“The seniors have been sensational and great leaders for the younger girls,” said ELC coach Megan Anderson. “They will be missed.”

Anderson completes her first year as head coach as the Midgettes finish with a 21-11 record.

“I thought we had a great year,” she said. “The girls learned a lot and played hard. I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
