Estherville Lincoln Central’s Maggie Asman is joyfully greeted at home plate after hitting a home run to give the Midgettes a 1-0 lead against Spencer on Saturday.

SPENCER – The cliche is that it’s hard to beat a team three times.

Estherville Lincoln Central had no trouble accomplishing the feat though with a 7-1 win over Spencer in Class 3A District Softball on Saturday.

The Midgettes had plenty of hits and several good defensive plays to highlight the victory.

Defensively, the Tigers were retired in order in every inning except the fifth when an ELC error and a couple hits allow Spencer to plate its first run against the Midgettes this season. (ELC won the first game 1-0 and the second 7-0.)

Senior Maggie Asman gave the Midgettes the early lead with a leadoff home run over the left field fence in the second inning.

In the third inning, No. 9 batter Ashley Weston hit a one-out triple and scored on a passed ball.

Taylar Jacobson followed with a single. With Sadie Winter at the plate, Jacobson first stole second base and then third base, sliding around the tag each time. She then scored when Winter grounded out to the shortstop for a 3-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, Asman was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Caitlyn Swisher and scored on a single by Kendall Bosch.

After the Tigers picked up their run up in the fifth inning, ELC answered with three in the bottom of the inning.

Weston hit a one-out single followed by consecutive singles from Jacobson and Winter to load the bases. Emily Kirchner then had a bases-clearing double for the 7-1 lead.

The Midgettes had nine hits on the night with Asman going 2-2 with an RBI. Jacobson and Weston each were 2-3. Winter, Kirchner and Bosch each were 1-3.

Defensive highlights for ELC included third baseman Brooke Egeland making a running catch on a popped up bunt attempt in the second inning. In the third inning, shortstop Kirchner made a diving catch on a bloop just behind the pitcher.

Thrice, Bosch knocked down come-backers and made the throw to first.-one a hard hit to the shin. The freshman pitcher had five put-outs in the game to go along with her six strikeouts.
