Indians soar over Hawks

MILFORD – It took a little while for Spirit Lake’s bats to pick up, but once the Indians got rolling there was no stopping them in a 14-2 six-inning win over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in the first round of Class 2A district baseball on Saturday.

Down 2-1 heading into the top of the fourth, Spirit Lake pounded out five hits along with a walk, a hit-batter and a sacrifice fly to score six runs.

Spirit Lake advances to today’s game with Okoboji. The Pioneers needed eight innings to beat Sioux Central 3-2 on Saturday.

In the Indians’ game, starting pitcher Mitch Peschon helped his cause with a leadoff single in the fourth inning. Two passed balls moved him around to third base. Levi Davis drew a walk followed by consecutive RBI singles from Nic Erickson and Paul Brown. Jordan Gayer was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

TJ Johnson delivered another single which combined with a Hawk error, drove in two runs. Ryan Jennings hit a sacrifice fly and Derrick Miner also had an RBI single for the 7-2 Indian lead.

Spirit Lake added one run in the fifth as Erickson was hit by a pitch with two outs and stole second. Two balls that got past the catcher brought him home.

The Indians had another six-run inning in the sixth. Both Ethan Carlson and Shae Heinrichs had a two-RBI single in the inning.

The Indians had nine hits.

Johnson was 2-3 with two RBI, Brown was 1-2 with an RBI, Heinrichs was 1-1 with two RBI, Carlson was 1-4 with two RBI, Peschon and Erickson each were 1-3 with an RBI, Miner and Jennings each went 1-4 with an RBI.

Peschon pitched all six innings in the win. He gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits with five strikeouts and one hit batter.
