Algona 8, ELC 7, 8 innings: Bulldogs nip Midgets

Estherville Lincoln Central and Algona made the regular season last a little bit longer, but it was the Bulldogs who came out on top 8-7 in eight innings on Wednesday

The final three innings featured several lead changes.

ELC took its first lead since the second inning in the bottom of the sixth. The Midget broke a 5-5 tie when Justin Doyle hit a one-out double. Courtesy runner Dan Jones scored on an RBI single by Keith Fandel.

The Midgets nearly had the win in the top of the seventh. The Bulldogs had runners at second and third with two outs when Ben Tull hit a grounder to shortstop Alex Arends. But Arends’ throw to first got past Jeremy Hunt allowing two runs to score as the Bulldogs took a 7-6 lead.

ELC kept the game alive with a run in the bottom of the inning. Cody Prather singled and courtesy runner Adam McCarthy went to second on the sacrifice bunt by Jeremy Hunt. With two outs, Chance Moore came up with an RBI single to tie the game at 7-7.

In the eighth inning, the Bulldogs got a leadoff double by Chad Benson. After a sacrifice bunt, Grant Person’s RBI single proved to be the game-winner.

ELC went down in order in the bottom of the eighth.

Early in the game, ELC scored first when Scott Schmidt and Keith Fandel each drew one-out walks. The runners advanced when a balk was called on starting pitcher Tull. Schmidt then scored on a passed ball.

ELC starter Prather struggled in the top of the second giving up two walks and a hit. A double scored three runs.

In the bottom of the third, ELC got two runs back when Doyle and Marcus Christensen each drew a walk. A sacrifice bunt by Schmidt advanced the runners who both scored on an two-RBI single by Fandel.

ELC tied the game in the fifth when Christensen drew a walk followed by a one-out single from Fandel. A Bulldog error allowed when run to score and a an RBI single by Prather tied the game at 5-5.

At the plate, Fandel was 3-4 with three RBI, Prather was 3-4 with an RBI, Moore was 2-4 with an RBI, Doyle was 1-3 with a double and Schmidt was 1-3.

Prather pitched seven innings, but Joe Clayton pitched the final inning and took the loss.

ELC (15-16) hosts Class 3A District Baseball on Friday. Algona and Storm Lake play at 5 p.m. followed by ELC and Spencer at 7 p.m.

Junior varsity

The Estherville Lincoln Central junior varsity lost 17-6 to Algona.

Tyler Lutz took the loss.

Lutz was 2-3 at the plate while Gable Bonner and Matt Burrell each went 1-2 with an RBI and Brennan Nyren was 1-3.
