CARROLL – The 2009 All-Star games wrapped up this past weekend with Saturday’s games.

Sunday’s championship and consolation games were canceled due to rain.

Estherville Lincoln Central’s Keith Fandel and the Small Schools West team finished out the all-star tournament with a 5-1 loss to the Large Schools West on Saturday.

Fandel went 0-2, grounding out each time, in the final game.

Hits were scarce throughout the tournament dominated by the state’s top pitchers.

“The pitching was amazing,” said Fandel. “You didn’t get many chances to get a good pitch, so you had to be ready to jump one one. Most pitchers down here have three pitches.”

In the final game, Small Schools West had four hits and the Large Schools West had five hits.

The Small Schools West team finished with an 0-3 record, but Fandel was part of a mini-victory.

The teams held a ‘baseball Olympics’ and Fandel was part of a relay throw that took first place.

“We beat Large Schools West by a tenth of a second,” he said.

Fandel, who plans to continue his baseball career at Iowa Lakes next spring, said the all-star event was a great experience.

“It was a big honor and there are some great kids who played,” he said. “The coaches were great and treated us well and there were a lot of fun activities for us.”
