The common saying is practice makes perfect. Vince Lombardi once said, “Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect.” But first you need a place to practice.

The Estherville Lincoln Central football team tested out its new practice football fields for the first time Monday morning.

The practice area, located south of the Regional Wellness Center and Iowa Lakes’ Christensen Center, was somewhat damp due to weekend rains, but still served its purpose.

ELC activities director Brian DeJong said the fields were two years in the making.

“It started when we knocked down the Maniece building and started building the middle school on the (old) practice area,” he said.

Future school plans include Demoney Elementary expansion which will include part of the area that was being used for football practice.

DeJong said superintendent Dick Magnuson and the school board looked ahead knowing this new practice area was necessary.

“The purpose of it is for grade 7-12 football practice,” he said. “There’s a good 3 1/2 fields out there.

“A storage shed is still planned for equipment along with men’s and women’s restrooms,” he added.

The ELC Booster Club also helped out with pop-up sprinklers, making water hoses unnecessary.

While the fields aren’t perfect yet, DeJong said they will be reseeded one more time after this season and should be lush green fields by fall 2010.
