Wallaces named ELC Fans of the Year
Fans of the Year 2009 were announced at Estherville Lincoln Central High School Fall Showcase Friday. Recipients of the honor are long-time school sports supporters, Jerry and Sandy Wallace of Estherville.
“Thank you Jerry and Sandy for all you do to help our student athletes grow and succeed!” said Brian DeJong, assistant high school principal/activities director for ELC.
The couple moved to Estherville in 1974. Jerry is the community president at Bank Plus and Sandy retired from Holiday Express in 2007, after 20 years of employment.
They are members of the Trinity Lutheran Church. Sandy is the president of the women’s group and the church’s financial secretary, Jerry is a past member of the church board and has worked on the church building. Jerry is also a very dedicated member of Estherville Elks Lodge No. 528 and has been a longtime member of the Estherville Ambassadors. Jerry is an active member of Kiwanis. In Sandy’s free time she enjoys the outdoors with camping trips. She also likes to visit her granddaughters in Brookings and her dad and family.
They are the parents of two daughters: LeAnn and Kelly. LeAnn graduated from Estherville High School in 1986. She played volleyball and softball and was statistician for the Midgettes basketball team. Kelly graduated from EHS in 1987 and played volleyball. In 1991 LeAnn married Mike Gruhlke. They live in Jackson, Minn., where she is a pharmacist/owner of the Throndset Drug Company and Mike is a conservation officer with the DNR for the State of Minnesota.
Kelly married Tom Steffens in 1992 and they live in Brookings, SD. Kelly works part-time as a chiropractic assistant and Tom is the owner of Complete Plumbing. They have three daughters: Cierra,14, Allie 11, and Molly, 8.
Besides following the Midgets to all parts of the state of Iowa, Jerry and Sandy have traveled from Brookings to Watertown to Aberdeen and from Sioux Falls to Mitchell to watch their granddaughters participate in soccer, T-ball, basketball, swimming and softball. In their free time, Jerry and Sandy enjoy watching the Minnesota Twins and bird watching in their backyard. Jerry also enjoys woodworking and Sandy enjoys her flowers.
Over the years, the Wallaces have followed the Midgets closely from their local conference games to several state tournament games in various sports. Jerry has helped work the Estherville Relays and has been on the “chain gang” for the football team for many years. He was also named the Outstanding Estherville Booster Club Member in 1988.
