Mustangs start 2009 campaign on the road
ARMSTRONG – In 2008, the Armstrong-Ringsted football team’s run to a fourth consecutive playoff berth begins tonight at Woden.
Host Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka hasn’t had much success the last two seasons against the Mustangs losing by a combined score of 95-6 including a 40-6 loss a year ago.
Graduation took its toll in the A-R lineup including quarterback Ridge Christiansen, who provided a 1-2 punch for the Mustangs.
“We have some underclassmen ready to step up-sophomores who are now juniors,” said A-R coach Robert Zotz. “We also have a few seniors that played just one side of the ball last year and will be asked to play both sides this year.
“I feel the boys have worked hard in the offseason and put their bodies in position to play varsity,” said Zotz.
However running back Tyler Tonderum does return for his senior year and is expected to put up big numbers again. Tonderum led Class 8-Man in rushing two years ago and was second in 2008.
Zotz said he doesn’t know a lot about this year’s WCLT team.
The Tigers went 2-6 overall and 2-4 in District 3.
“We saw them at a football camp over the summer,” said Zotz of WCLT. “They have a new coach so our stance is to be ready for anything.
“In what we saw it appears they want to include the shotgun in their offense which gives us another element to worry about-whether they’ll run the draw or throw. We just have to be ready for the unknown.”
After two appearances in the state championship game, don’t expect the Mustangs to change too much offensively.
Zotz said he anticipates the Tigers will run a three-man defensive front.
“But we could see four, five or six (man fronts),” he said. “We’ve seen them all so we know how to block them..”
Zotz said he is confident in his team.
“The first game will open eyes to see how they’ve progressed.”
