Indians finish first at home
SPIRIT LAKE – The Spirit Lake boys cross country team put on a show at its home meet. Five runners finished in the top nine as the Indians ended with 29 points-30 points ahead of second-place Unity Christian.
“Unity’s a good team and we’ll see them again,” said Spirit Lake coach Tim Heinitz. “We had an excellent night and we’re capable of running like this night in and night out.”
Alec Baldwin closed the gap on Storm Lake’s Paul Yak in the individual race. Baldwin finished second in 15:44, trailing Yak by nine seconds.
Teammate Keith Byers finished third in 16:01 with Brandon Griffin placing seventh in 16:45, Will Norris in eighth in 16:56 and Mitch O’Neill in ninth in 16:57.
Non-counting runners were Kenan McQueen in 31st in 18:26 and Daniel Stover in 47th in 19:07.
Following Unity Christian’s 59 points, Spencer finished third with 114, Western Christian had 129, Storm Lake had 135, MOC-Floyd Valley had 136, Laurens-Marathon had 140, Sheldon had 184, Emmetsburg had 216 and Cherokee had 303.
Spirit Lake is at the Estherville Lincoln Central/Armstrong-Ringsted meet in Estherville next Tuesday.
