Midgettes stumble in opener

ALGONA – Coach Tyler Johnson was hoping for a little bit more in Estherville Lincoln Central’s first volleyball match of the season.

However with a team of mostly juniors and seniors, Bishop Garrigan showed its experience in a 3-1 victory over the Midgettes.

“What beat us is ball control. We didn’t pass the ball well in the first two games,” said Johnson. “We passed better in the third and forth games, but our hitters didn’t have any rhythm.”

Garrigan won by scores of 25-21, 25-17, 20-25 and 26-24.

“It’s great we came back in the third game-that showed some character,” said Johnson. “Garrigan didn’t hit the ball hard, but did put in positions we couldn’t return it. They passed better.”

Johnson said the difference was experience. ELC has just two returning players from the varsity team a year ago.

They led ELC in the opener.

Kelsie McCauley had 15 kills and Kaylene Vos had 32 assists. Alyssa Johnson contributed seven kills.

ELC (0-1) is on the road again next Tuesday against Sioux Central in Sioux Rapids.

In junior varsity action, ELC lost 2-0 by scores of 21-18 and 21-4.

The ELC freshman won 2-1 by scores of 20-25, 25-23, and 15-10.
