A-R opens play at St. Ed’s Tourney

FORT DODGE – The Armstrong-Ringsted volleyball team kicked of the 2009 season with a 1-3 start at the St. Edmond’s Tournament in Fort Dodge on Saturday.

The Mustangs opened with a 2-0 win over Southeast Webster Grand by scores of 21-11 and 21-14 in pool play.

They then lost 2-0 to Van Meter by scores of 21-13, 21-16 before ending pool play with a 21-18, 2-11 loss to Prairie Valley.

In tournament play, A-R faced Van Meter for a second time taking the first game, 25-14, but losing the next two games 25-22, 15-13.

Brianne Gonzales led the Mustang attack on the day with 18 kills including a a high of eight in the second meeting against Van Meter.

Megan Sanders had 16 kills with a high of seven in the win over Prairie Valley.

Taylor Grabinoski had 10 kills and Harley Lindell had seven.

Grabinoski had 31 set assists and Tess Christiansen had 13.

Sanders served up 10 aces including nine in the second meeting against Van Meter.

Sanders also led the defense with 22 digs while Gonzales had 20.

Lindell had a team-high seven blocks including four in the second match with Van Meter.

A-R (1-3) opens Cornbelt Conference play today as Ruthven-Ayrshire comes to Armstrong.
