Indians take third at own tournament
SPIRIT LAKE – The Spirit Lake volleyball team finished third overall at its own tournament on Saturday.
“What I like about our tournament is that it gives us some great competition to prepare us for our conference games,” said Spirit Lake coach Rachel Berkland. “We went 3-2 in match play and ended the day in 3rd place. We still struggle at time with letting teams back into the game but I can tell we are improving each time we play.”
In pool play, the Indians started with a 2-1 loss to North Sentral Kossuth by scores of 16-21, 21-6 and 15-10, but then beat Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 2-1 by scores of 21-19, 21-18, 16-14. Spirit Lake then swept Sibley-Ocheyedan 22-20, 21-16.
The Indians opened up tournament play against Okoboji, losing 21-9, 21-16, but then beat Harris-Lake Park 1-14, 21-15 in the third-place match.
Sara Martinson led the attack with 17 kills and also had six blocks. Regan Sieperda contributed 10 kills along with seven blocks.
Whitney Berkland had 29 assists while Alex Horsman had 12.
Serving, Berkland was 38-of-40 with seven aces, Horsman was 36-of-39 with six aces and Chelsie Stettnichs was 24-of-26 with an ace.
Defensively, Caila Jones had 54 digs while Chelsie Stettnichs had 35 and Haley Smith had 25.
Spirit Lake (7-4) is home against Emmetsburg today where the Indians will host Pink-Out night.
