Indians netters play tough tourney

FOREST CITY – The Spirit Lake volleyball team went 2-3 at the Forest City Tournament on Saturday.

The Indians opened with a 2-0 loss to Lake Mills followed by a 2-1 loss to Clear Lake and a 2-0 loss to Clarion-Goldfield.

Spirit Lake got back on track with a 2-1 win over North Iowa and then beat Boone 2-0.

“Forest City Tournament has some tough teams so each game we played we needed to be focused and on top of our game which can be hard to do after a long week.,” said Spirit Lake coach Rachel Berkland. “It was a great tournament to play in to get us ready for some tough games ahead in the conference.”

For the day, Sara Martinson and Regan Sieperda each had 12 kills and Chelsie Stettnichs had nine.

Whitney Berkland had 23 assists while Alex Horsman had 14. Serving, Stettnichs was 27-of-28 with an ace, Horsman was 35-of-37 with two aces and Berkland was 30-of-35 with four aces.

Defensively, Caila Jones led the way with 35 digs while Stettnichs had 29 and Haley Smith had 23.

Sieperda had four blocks.
