ELCAR battles rain, cold to place second

EAGLE GROVE – Running against the cold and the win, Estherville Lincoln Central/Armstrong-Ringssted’s Traci Speltz finished second overall at the Eagle Grove Invitational.

Speltz finished second to Humboldt’s Katie Fevold and ELCAR finished second overall to the Wildcats at Tuesday’s meet.

Humboldt came in with 48 points while ELCAR finished with 49.

“Traci ran out and took charge,” said ELCAR coach Tina Burton of the senior who finished in 16 minutes, 14 seconds. “I felt all the girls went out and tried to do a personal best in the conditions.”

Fellow senior Brooke Egeland also had a top 10 finish as she finished in 16:36 to place seventh.

“Brooke also ran a strong race,” said Burton.

ELCAR’s other three runners counting toward the team score also finished in the top 20.

Mackenzie Woodyard was 13th in 17:06, Paige Taylor placed 17th in 17:27 and Bailey Raska placed 20th in 17:40.

ELCAR had one non-counting score as Alyssa Ayres finished 29th in 18:09.

“I missed the pack tonight, but was happy with how the team performed,” said Burton. “We still have things we need to work on, but we’re gearing up to prepare for the next couple weeks.”

Rounding out the team scoring, Algona placed third with 76 points followed by Spencer with 116, Garner-Hayfield with 120, Clear lake with 128, Iowa Falls with 169 and Hampton-Dumont with 197.

Varsity boys

Jay Smith finished 32nd overall in 19:05. Teammate Martin Christensen placed 53rd in 20:50.

Junior varsity girls

Burton said Samantha Natterstad ran her best race of the season as she finished fifth in the junior varsity girls race in 18:39. Krista Pelzer placed seventh in 18:59 while Melissa Gjerde placed 13th in 19:51. Also Kayla Bortvit was 51st in 21:116 and Sheila Eggers placed 71st in 22:11.
