ELC takes third at Tornado Tourney
STORM LAKE – After a slow start, the Estherville Lincoln Central volleyball team picked up the pace enough to place third at the Storm Lake Volleyball Tournament on Saturday.
“We ended the day 3-2, winning the third-place match, which put us in the double digit win column for the season,” said ELC coach Tyler Johnson.
ELC opened the day with a 21-11, 21-18 loss to Spirit Lake before bouncing back for a 21-10, 21-13 win over Emmetsburg. Against Storm Lake, ELC lost 21-13, 21-16 before beating Cherokee 22-20, 21-18.
ELC had a rematch with the Braves for the third-place match, winning 25-15, 25-17.
“We had another one of our slow morning starts, especially with our passing,” said coach Johnson. “We struggled getting the ball to the setter against Spirit Lake, therefore didn’t run much offense. We played much better the rest of the day, as our passing improved and we cut down on mistakes. We also had one of our better offensive days, as we had well rounded kill numbers.”
Kelsie McCauley, who had 22 kills and Kaylene Vos, who had 64 assists, both were named to the all-tournament team.
Maggie Haugen contributed 19 kills while Alyssa Johnson had 17 and Allie Sievert had 16.
Sadie Winter contributed 38 digs. Serving, Ashley Weston was 41-of-42 with three aces.
ELC finishes the regular season 11-15 overall and the Midgettes were 2-7 in the Lakes Conference. The Midgettes open Class 2A Tournament play at 7 p.m. today in Emmetsburg.
