Indians look to defend 2A crown
SHELDON – Rated No. 1 all season, the Spirit Lake boys cross country team will have a chance to defend its 2A title.
The Indians won their district meet easily on Monday with four runners qualifying individually by placing in the top 10 and finishing with 42 points.
Alec Baldwin finished fourth in 16 minutes, 38 seconds with Will Norris in fifth in 16?:54, Brandon Griffin in sixth in 16:59 and Mitch-O’Neill in eighth in 17:04. Keith Byers was the final counting score as he placed 19th in 17:43.
“Our top four ran an outstanding race,” said Spirit Lake coach Tim Heinitz. “Will, Mitch and Brandon ran their best race of the season.”
Heinitz said Baldwin was a little disappointed in his race. He was second most of the race, but was caught by two runners in the last half mile.
“He may have started too fast, but last year he was third and the district meet and had a great race at state,” said Heinitz. “We’re hoping for the same this year.
Byers, who finished in the top 10 at state a year ago, has been battling an injury.
“He also may have started too fast and he’s not ready to run at full speed yet,” said Heinitz.
Non-counting scores were a 29th place finish by Kenan McQueen in 18:12 and Daniel Stover finished 45th in 18:59.
Battle Creek-Ida Grove finished second with 65 points while Unity Christian was third with 69 points. The top three teams qualify for state.
Webster City finished fourth with 82 points followed by Sioux Center with 97, Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto with 172, George-Little Rock/Central Lyon with 145, Sheldon with 190, Okoboji with 250 and Southern Cal with 263.
The state meet is Saturday at Kennedy Park in Fort Dodge.
