Indians place sixth
FORT DODGE – For the second year in a row, the Spirit Lake cross country team placed in the top 10 at the state meet, this time finishing sixth with a total of 193 points on Saturday.
Indian runners placed 36, 39, 60, 61, 79 and 109 in the meet.
They were led by junior Briana Brunsvold’s time of 16 minutes, 19 seconds. She was followed by McKenzie Dziedzic (16:21), KJ Veldman (16:51), Mary Brown (16:53), Shirley Coenen (17:00), Chelsea Parks (17:14) and Liz Skogerboe (18:36).
“I think the girls ran about as well as they could run,” said Spirit Lake coach Tim Heinitz. “I was hoping for top half and we knew we wouldn’t have any girls way up there at the top but we knew we could have all of them in the top half of the meet and that’s what happened.
“If you look at all of our girls times today, they ran about as well as they could and I couldn’t be more pleased with how they ran.”
Also, for the second year in a row, the team says good bye to four seniors. Dziedzic, Brown, Coenen and Parks all ran in the final race of their high school careers.
“All of our seniors were great this year,” said Heinitz. “They will be missed.”
LaPorte City Union took the 2A championship with a score of 57.They were followed by Pekin (60), Iowa City, Regina (116), Unity Christian (132), Hudson (152), Spirit Lake, Cascade (19)4, Humboldt (206), Wilton (224), North Polk (230), Solon (236), Sioux Center (239), Missouri Valley (253), Albia (354) and Central Springs (454).
Top three individuals were Ashley Frush (15:17) of Laporte City Union, Nicole Keinmeyer (15:18) of Iowa City Regina and Brittany Frush (15:20) also of LaPorte City Union.
