Fast start helps No. 1 Lakers

By Staff | Nov 12, 2009

WORTHINGTON – A fast start helped the Division II No. 1 Iowa Lakes basketball team to a 78-68 win over Minnesota West on Wednesday.

Laker coach Troy Larson said his team jumped out to leads of 18-2 and 24-4 before the visitors crawled back into the game. Iowa Lakes led 46-31 at halftime.

“The first seven to eight minutes, we played about as well as we could,” Larson said.

The Lakers didn’t keep up the effort. Larson said his team had three missed dunks and many opportunities to increase their advantage.

‘We still have a lot to work on to get more consistent,” he said.

Three players reached double digits in the scoring column with Darryl Davis and Armon Boston each scoring 13 points. Jerron Stone chipped in with 11 along with a team-high nine rebounds and three assists.

Iowa Lakes (2-0) travels to the Northeast Community College Tournament this week. The Lakers are home Monday against Division I, No. 14 Southeastern Community College. That game starts at 7:30 p.m.
