ESTHERVILLE – The old saying goes, “Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.” However, the Estherville Lincoln Central girls tennis team nearly set a bomb off on Thursday as the Midgettes were edged by conference superpower Spirit Lake-Okoboji, 5-4.

“It was an awesome night,” said ELC coach Larry Kirchner. “The girls battled hard and we were close in nearly every match. It was a lot of fun.”

In singles action, Emily Swalve defeated Haley Smith 10-4 and Erin Olson defeated Aubry Kolegraff by injury default, however, Olson was up 9-8 when Kolegraff’s calf began to cramp up.

Lexie Hash fell to Alli Gerking 10-2, Kelsie McCauley fell to K.J. Veldman 10-2, Morgan Kirchner fell to Hannah Coenen 10-4 and Kaylene Vos fell to Shirty Coenen 11-10, 9-7 in the tie breaker.

In doubles action, Hash and McCauley defeated Shirley Coenen and Veldman 10-2 and Swalve and Kirchner defeated Hannah Coenen and Jamie Kohlhaase 10-8.

Olson and Vos fell to Gerking and Kolegraff 10-8.

In JV action, ELC fell to SL-O 7-2

In singles, Liz Olson won 8-4, Allison Hevern won 8-6 and Tessa Bernholtz won 8-4.

Holly Emerson lost 9-7, Corin Swalve lost 8-3 and Kaylee Schoon lost 8-6

In doubles, Hevern and Olson lost 8-5, Emerson and Lepird lost 8-3 and Schoon and Bernholtz lost 8-5.

ELC returns to action Monday as they travel to face the Spencer Tigers.
