Benson, Weber qualify for Nationals

PLEASANT HILL – The Kirkwood men’s golf team had too much talent for Iowa Lakes, but the Lakers finished a respectable second at the Region XI Championship on Monday.

Two Lakers also finished in the top 10 to earn a berth to the 2010 NJCAA National Championship played at Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz., May 18-21..

Scott Benson finished tied for sixth overall with a 36-hole score of 149 while Jarvis Weber placed ninth with a 151 to earn a trip to nationals.

Kirkwood won by 39 strokes with a 579. Iowa Lakes edged AIB for second 6-18 to 621.

Rounding out the Laker scoring were Scott Kremer with a 156 and A.J. Appel with a 162.

Non-counting score was Jimmy Geelan’s 165.

Kirkwood had four of the top five golfers with Derek McConnell leading the way with a 141. Teammates Dillon Cooney and Jacques Ungerer tied for second with 145s while Kyler Stable was tied for fourth with a 148.

Rounding out the team scoring, Ellsworth finished with a 631, Des Moines Area shot a 634, North Iowa Area shot a 642 and Iowa Central had a 651.
