Weather shows SL-O mercy

CHEROKEE – Rain cut short what was turning out to be an ugly outing for the Spirit Lake-Okoboji boys tennis team on Thursday as the Indians fell to Cherokee 6-0.

“We had a couple of close matches today, but overall this was not our best play of the season by far,” said SL-O coach Dan Taylor. “The Cherokee guys did play very well, and jumped out to good sized leads in most of the matches right off the bat.”

In singles, Wes Bergquist fell to Cole Renken 10-2, Nelson Davis lost to Alex Struck 10-6, Mitch O’Neill lost to Nick Parker 10-3, Brady Harmelink lost to Jordan Ogren 10-4, Brandon Stoll lost to John Bieber 10-8 and Brett Kraus lost to Matthew Enderlin 11-9.

Coach Taylor believed his team was beginning to look better at the start of doubles, however, the teams were not able to finish.

“We started playing the first two of the three doubles matches, and the guys were playing better in doubles than they were in singles,” said Taylor. “But Cherokee is a solid team. I give them credit for playing a very good match today.”

Spirit Lake-Okoboji returns to action Monday as they host Spencer.

In JV action, Ray Zalabowski defeated Zac Woods 8-4 and Levi Davis defeated Connor Ogren 8-0.
