Midgettes bit by Bulldogs
The Estherville Lincoln Central girls tennis team couldn’t get a break against a much-improved LeMars team on Tuesday.
The visiting Bulldogs won two tiebreakers to pull off a mini-upset 5-4 over the Midgettes.
“We had to switch up our lineup a bit , but we still saw a lot of good matches,” said ELC coach Larry Kirchner.
Liz Olson and Corin Swalve were both pulled up to the varsity for the match.
“It’s a tough jump to varsity for both of them,” the coach said. “LeMars has improved tremendously since the first time we played them. They’re young and they’ll be tough in the future.”
In singles play, ELC came up with just two wins.
Erin Olson defeated Erica Westhoff at the No. 2 slot, 10-3 while Emily Swalve beat Molly Fisher by the same score at the No. 4 singles.
In other matches, Lexie Hash lost 10-4 to Natalie Miller and Kaylene Vos fell 10-8 to Carolyn Ahlers. At the No. 5 singles, Morgan Kirchner battled back from a 9-4 deficit to tie the match at 10-10, but lost the tiebreaker 9-7. Olson lost 10-6 to to Katie Mies at the No. 6 singles.
In doubles play, Olson and Vos defeated Miller and Westhoff 10-6. Hash and Corin Swalve lost 11-10 (7-5) o Ahlers and Fisher. Kirchner and and Emily Swalve led their match 7-4 when it was called.
In junior varsity play, ELC won 6-3.
In singles, Corin Swalve won 8-6; Holly Enerson won 8-4, Kaylee Schoon won 8-4, Tessa Bernholtz won 8-4, Jessica Lepird lost 8-5 and Amanda Heinrichs won 8-3.
In doubles, Enerson and Schoon lost 9-8 (9-7); Bernholtz and Heinrichs won 8-2 and Lepird and Megan Rogers lost 8-6.
In exhibition matches, Emily Lair and Morgan Schubert lost 6-2; Emily Chrestiansen and Kelly Zebedee won 6-2; Cheyanne Lepird and McKenzie Wilson lost 6-2; Janae Howing and Lair won 6-4 and Zebedee and Schubert lost 6-4.
