Storm Lake downs Indians

By Staff | May 13, 2010

STORM LAKE – When it rains, it pours – and the Spirit Lake-Okoboji boys tennis team was in over its head on Tuesday as the Indians fell to Storm Lake 6-3 after beating the Tornadoes earlier in the year by the same score.

“Both the varsity and JV meets were very close,” said SL-O coach Dan Taylor. “Both of them came down to matches decided by tiebreakers, and in the varsity meet, a few no-ad deuce points here or there.

“We just didn’t have success today winning tiebreakers and deuce points, so the meet fell Storm Lake’s way today. Our teams are pretty evenly matched, so it’s one that can go either way.”

Wes Bergquist and Brandon Stoll picked up singles victories for the Indians as both won in straight sets.

“Both Wes and Brandon played excellent matches today,” said Taylor. “Wes definitely played his best match of the year, and they also looked good in doubles against a very solid team.”

Nelson Davis and Mitch O’Neill picked up a doubles victory for the Indians as the duo defeated their opponents 3-6, 6-3 and 10-8 in the tie breaker.

In singles, Davis, O’Neill and Brett Kraus all lost in straight sets and Brady Harmelink fell in a 10-8 tie breaker.

In doubles, Bergquist and Stoll and Harmelink and Kraus fell in straight sets.
