Mustangs ready to run at state meet
ARMSTRONG – Armstrong-Ringsted faithful will have plenty of opportunities to cheer on the Mustangs as the boys track team qualified five athletes in six events at the state track meet at Drake Stadium.
However, it is no secret that all eyes will be fixed firmly on star sprinter Tyler Tonderum who will be seeking redemption in both the 100- and 200-meter dash events after faltering slightly in 2009.
As a junior last season, Tonderum took fourth in the 200 with a time of 22.81 seconds and fifth in the 100 with a time of 11.38 seconds, but felt like he didn’t perform to the best of his abilities.
At the time, Tonderum believed his start in the 100-meter cost him but felt like he got a better jump in the 200 and that made the difference.
Tonderum enters this season with the sixth best time in the 100 at 10.79 seconds and will be competitive if he can match that number at Drake.
Last year’s 100-meter champion, Jesse Selegby of West Lyon Inwood, currently holds the third best time on the year at 10.65 seconds and took first last year in 11.13 seconds.
Tonderum’s best shot at a state title figures to come in the 200-meter dash, where the senior is currently third in the state with a time of 22.29 seconds.
Fellow senior Craig Tigges is also looking strong this year in the discus and has continued to improve as evidenced by his personal best throw of 148 feet, 8 inches in last week’s district meet.
Tigges will face some stiff competition, however, as returning champion, junior Cade Lambsen of Mount Ayr, will look to repeat his performance of last year where he dominated the field with a throw of 158 feet, 1 inch.
Junior high jumper Travis Hantelman returns after finishing in sixth place at last year’s state meet with a leap of 6 feet, 2 inches. Hantelman is currently in sixth place with a leap of 6 feet, 3 inches on the season, but is just 2.5 inches short of top competitor, sophomore Jordan Cress of Olin.
Also qualifying for the state meet is the 4×200-meter relay team of Tonderum, Tigges, Spencer Clausen and Tyler Fedderson.
The team currently ranks 16th in the state with a time of 1 minute, 33.66 seconds.
