Day one for SLP – Baldwin earns fifth in 3200 run
DES MOINES – The Spirit Lake Park boys and girls track teams earned a little bit of hardware in the first day of the 2010 State Track and Field Meet in Des Moines.
Competing in Class 3A, Alec Baldwin earned the school’s lone medal on Thursday with a fifth-place finish in the 3200-meter run. He ran the race in 9 minutes 33.84 seconds-12 seconds behind 3A champ Brogan Austin of Boone.
Teammate Will Norris also ran the 3200 and finished 12th in 10:07.
The Indians had two events that made it past the preliminaries-Megan Lawler in the girls 200-meter dash and the boys shuttle hurdle relay team. Both finals events are Saturday.
Lawler had the fifth-best qualifying time in the 200-meter dash in 26.01 seconds. The top time came from Libbey Schubert of Fairfield, who finished in 25.28 seconds. The girls 200-meter dash finals for all classes start at 1:25 p.m. on Saturday.
Lawler also competed in the 100-meter dash. Her time of 13.04 did not qualify her for the finals and placed her 12th overall.
The shuttle hurdle relay team of Aric Waltz, DJ Smith, Rick Wilson and Kyle Heidebrink had the fifth-best qualifying time. The clocked in at 1:00.28.
Waverly Shell-Rock turned in the top qualifying time of 59.01 seconds.
The boys shuttle hurdle relay finals for all classes start at 11:40 a.m. Saturday.
Other results from Thursday, mcKenzie Dziedzic placed 17th in the 3000-meter run with a time of 11:15.21. Teammate Briana Brunsvold finished 20th in 11:29.10.
Jessica Wallace placed 18th in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 10 inches.
