Lakers pitch shutout in game one at Nationals

NORMAL, Ill. – After rain delayed play at the 2010 National Junior College Division II Softball Tournament, it didn’t affect the Iowa Lakes softball team.

The Lakers opened play at nationals in Normal, Ill., with a convincing 8-0 victory over Cecil College.

Iowa Lakes out-hit its opponent 13-1, led by Adriana Tabone and Christianne Saiz, who each went 3-3 on the day. Saiz also had five RBIs including a three-run home run in the fourth inning..

The Lakers went to work in the bottom of the first inning as Tabone singled and Ashley Heiberger was hit by a pitch. A double by Saiz scored one run and heiberger stole home. Saiz then scored on a passed ball as the Lakers took a 3-0 lead.

Saiz had another RBI single in the second inning and Kelsey Ennenga had a ground-out RBI in the third inning.

In the fourth inning, Tabone and Heiberger both singled before Saiz hit her home run.

Julia Nealer earned the victory on the mound. In five innings she gave up one hit and three walks while striking out 13.

Cecil’s best chance to score after starting the game with a walk and a single in the first inning. After two strikeouts by Nealer, a second walk loaded the bases with Nealer ending the threat with her third strikeout.

Morgan Davis was 2-3 while Christy Cabrera, Pricilla Quintana and Melissa Lenzie each had a hit.

Iowa Lakes’ second game Friday began around 9:30 p.m. against Parkland College. Parkland (47-16), won 3-2 over Blackhawk (37-13) in their first-round game.
