Lakers place 3rd at Nat’ls

NORMAL, Ill. – The Iowa Lakes softball team went 3-1 over the weekend at the 2010 NJCAA Softball Championships to place third overall.

On Friday, the Lakers defeated Parkland Community College 6-2 before falling to Muskegon 4-3.

Julia Nealer picked up the win against Parkland, striking out 12 batters in seven innings of work.

At the plate, Adriana Tabone was 2-4 with an RBI, Ashley Heiberger was 2-4 with an RBI, Pricilla Quintana was 2-3 with two RBIs, Morgan Davis was 1-3 with an RBI, Kristen Heimerl was 1-3 with an RBI, Melissa Lenzi was 1-3 and Christianne Saiz was 1-4.

The Lakers were outhit 7-4 against Muskegon as Tabone was 2-3 with an RBI, Davis was 1-3 with an RBI and Heimerl was 1-3.

Nealer picked up the loss, but allowed just two earned runs and struck out nine in six innings.

On Saturday, the Lakers defeated Johnson County in a pitchers’ duel, 1-0, before crushing East Central CC 10-2.

Nealer picked up both wins.

The Lakers got just three hits against Johnson County as Christy Cabrera, Saiz and Davis each went 1-3.

Davis drove in Tabone, who reached base on a walk, in the sixth inning for the game’s only run.

The flood gates opened against East Central, however, as it took the Lakers just eight hits to score 10 runs, eight in the sixth inning.

Heiberger was 2-2 with two RBI and a home run, Lenzi was 3-3 with an RBI, Davis was 1-3 with an RBI and a homer, Cabrera was 1-4 with an RBI, Saiz was 1-3 with two RBIs.
