Indians hot to begin summer
SPIRIT LAKE – The Spirit Lake baseball and softball teams have opened the season on a roll with a combined overall record of 5-1.
The baseball team is currently 2-0 on the year with wins over Sheldon and Harris-Lake Park.
The Indians squeaked out a season-opening win over the Orabs on Wednesday, 4-3.
Mitch Peschon struck out 11 batters, earning the victory on the mound for Spirit Lake while Nick Erickson and Levi Davis were both 2-4 at the plate.
The winning continued on Thursday, as the Indians defeated non-conference rival Harris-Lake Park, 14-5.
The Indians scored seven runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a Tyler Dean two-run homer, to earn the victory.
The softball team has been impressive in this young season, opening with a 3-1 record.
The Indians kicked off the season with a 11-1 victory over West Bend-Mallard on Monday and followed that with a 14-11 slugfest with rival Okoboji on Tuesday.
Spirit Lake’s Cara Vale struck out eight Pioneer batters to pick up her second win of the season.
On Wednesday, the Indians picked up their first and only loss of the season against No. 2 ranked Newell Fonda, 9-0, before earning win number three on Thursday against Harris-Lake Park, 14-10.
