ELC holds on against LeMars

LEMARS – The Estherville Lincoln Central softball team held on to a 4-3 victory over LeMars as the Midgettes opened Lakes Conference play on Wednesday.

ELC began the game well with a one-out single by Ashley Weston and a triple by Emily Kirchner. When the ball got past the LeMars catcher, Kirchner also scored on the play as ELc led 2-0.

LeMars came back with a two-run home run by Kirsti Ruhland in the fourth inning.

ELC responded in the top of the sixth as Kirchner doubled and Kendall Bosch drew a walk. Morgan Schichtl reached on an error and Taylor Lago came up with an RBI single. The Midgettes plated two runs in the inning.

LeMars didn’t go away as Ruhland hit an RBI double in the bottom of the inning.

ELC couldn’t extend its lead in the seventh.

Bosch, who had seven strikeouts on the night, gave up a leadoff walk and stolen base to start the bottom of the seventh inning.

ELC’s defense came through though.

Lago caught an popped up bunt attempt. ELC got another out when LeMars’ No. 8 batter hit a sacrifice bunt.

With the tying run moving to third, ELC escaped town with the win when the No. 9 batter grounded out to second baseman Erin Kirchner.

ELC (3-0 overall, 1-0 in the Lakes) takes another road trip Friday when the teams travels to Cherokee.

In junior varsity play, LeMars edged ELC 3-2.
