Vos, Olson advance at State Doubles Tournament
IOWA CITY – Estherville Lincoln Central’s Kaylene Vos and Erin Olson proved they are one of the top eight doubles tennis teams in Iowa’s Class 1A after posting a 2-1 record in the first day of state competition on Thursday.
The ELC duo was paired against No. 2 seed Red Oak’s Rachel Pierson and Emily Pierson in the first round and fell 6-1, 6-0.
But the Midgettes came back in the consolation bracket.
ELC defeated Allie Parson and Erica Frederiksn of Audubon 7-6 (7), 6-3 and then beat Atlantic’s Liz Metheny and Megan Hoehns
Vos said she and Erin played their best tennis of the day in the third match.
“We really opened up strong and didn’t let up,” Vos said. “I’m excited that we’re in the top eight in the state.”
The key in making it to the second day of competition though came in the second match of the day against the Audubon pair.
ELC trailed in the first set by scores of 4-1 and 5-2 before rallying to tie the match and win the tiebreaker.
“We got our ground strokes going and kept them away from the net,” said Olson. “I’m proud of how we came back.”
ELC coach Larry Kirchner said the ELC pair played “tremendous” in mounting the rally.
Of the day’s final match, Kirchner said the Atlantic duo didn’t lob well.
“The match was closer than the score shows. There were a lot of deuce games and there’s no ad on the consolation side,” said Kirchner.
The ELC pair will likely see a familiar foe in the consolation semifinals today-Spirit Lake/Okoboji’s Alli Gerking and Aubry Kolegraff.
