IOWA CITY – The day might not have been what the Estherville Lincoln Central tennis duo of Kaylene Vos and Erin Olson hoped for, but the two Midgettes did finish as the eighth-beest doubles team in Class 1A in the state of Iowa.

Vos and Olson faced a familiar foe in Spirit Lake-Okoboji’s Aubry Kolegraff and Alli Gerking in championship day at the state tournament on Friday.

While the ELC pair played well, Gerking and Kolegraff prevailed prevailed 6-3, 6-4.

“The girls played well against SLO,” said ELC coach Larry Kirchner. “There were a couple of tiebreakers, but with the no-ad scoring, SLO came out on top.”

That set up a seventh-place match with Red Oak’s Kaely Piller and Brittany Walker.

ELC won the first two games of hte first set, but lost that won 6-2. The Midgettes again won the first two games in the second set, but then had to rally before losing 7-6 (7-3).

“Both girls are frustrated because they didn’t play up to their potential,” said Kirchner.

However the ELC duo is the first to place since Anna Kabe and Stephanie Bohmer placed eighth in 2001.

ELC set four state qualifiers-a doubles team and two singles players- to state in 2007, but none advanced to the top eight.

For Vos, it was the final match of her prep career for the senior.

Olson, a junior, will return to lead a young ELC squad in 2011 as five varsity players graduated this year.
