Sioux City silences ELC sluggers
SIOUX CITY – Winning in Sioux City is never easy, no matter which team you play. On Tuesday, the Estherville Lincoln Central softball team couldn’t come up with a win in a doubleheader against Sioux City East.
The hosts out-hit the visitors 20-5 in the two games, but to ELC’s credit the difference in both games was two runs as East won the first 5-3 and the second 4-2.
“We weren’t hitting the ball well at all,” said ELC coach Megan Anderson. “This was a different level than we’ve seen this year.”
ELC attempted to rally in both games.
Trailing 5-0 heading into the top of the seventh in game one, Brooke Egeland drew a one-out walk and Kellie Christensen hit a bunt that was misplayed by the East third baseman. Sadie Winter followed with an RBI single with Ashley Weston driving in two runs on her hit before the game ended.
ELC had just two other hits with Egeland hitting a double and Morgan Schichtl recording a single.
Kendall Bosch took the loss on the mound. She struck out five batters and gave up eight hits.
In game two, ELC trailed 4-1 heading into the seventh inning.
The Midgettes loaded the bases with no outs, but only managed one more run when Erin Kirchner drew a walk to force it across the plate.
Egeland had the lone hit for ELC as she went 1-1 with two walks.
Egeland also started on the mound where she gave up 12 hits with no strikeouts and one walk. Only one East run was earned as ELC committed three errors.
ELC’s defensive highlight of the second game was a line drive caught by Bosch at third base and picked off the runner at first base for a double play.
ELC (5-2) returns to Lakes Conference action today at Storm Lake.
